Kimmo's most elaborate project to date is
the extravaganza entitled Kalmuk, featuring fifteen members of Tapiola
Sinfonietta, one of Finland's best chamber orchestras, and two of Finland's
most respected alternative music percussionists Abdissa "Mamba"
Assefa and Samuli Kosminen.
Kalmuk is an extended work composed by Pohjonen, conceived
with the goal of stretching the possibilities and capabilities of classical
orchestral music and players and to find new sounds and ways of playing.
This music is possible only with the incorporation of the following elements.
Specifically:
-Pohjonen uses the same kind of amplification as in his
power-packed solo concerts.
-Like in Pohjonen's solo and Kluster shows, effects created by Pohjonen
will play a major role in Kalmuk, as the entire orchestra actually plays
with the effects; and the orchestra is actually looped live on stage,
the sound reproduced through Kimmo's FX gear.
-Improvisation is a vital part of Kalmuk, with improvisations taking place
within compositions. Sinfonietta members improvise alongside Kimmo and
the other players.
-As in the solo and Kluster shows, the audience hears the performance
in full surround sound. In addition, for Kalmuk, there will be a quadrophonic
sound system on stage to enhance the performing experience. The sound
is engineered by Heikki Iso-Ahola and Kalle Vanhapelto.
-Like Pohjonen's solo concerts and Kluster concerts, Kalmuk is an aural
and a visual experience with the lighting designer who creates an elaborate
optical spectacle.
-Contrary to the usual practice of orchestras, no notes are used on stage,
giving players greater freedom and flexibility to find new ways of playing
and expressing.
Tapiola Sinfonietta instruments in Kalmuk: 4 x 1st violin,
2nd violin, viola, double bass, flute, 2 x oboe, clarinet, 2 x bassoon,
2 x English horn.
